We welcome model Tony Babczyk at Red to Yearbook for an exclusive interview and session portraits taken by Nathan Best. Enjoy!
Name: Tony Babczyk at Red Models
Photographer: Nathan Best
1. Hello. Welcome to Yearbook! How old are you and where are you from?
Hey I am 24 years old and from Germany. I live close to the Dutch border, in Düsseldorf.
2. How did you get into modeling and how long have you been doing it?
A good friend was scouted during a school exchange in New York City. When he came back I asked him out during a B Ball session and when I scored I told him to send some of my pictures to his agent. I didn’t have any pictures and I didn’t mean it, but he took my myspace selfies and sent them to George from Red Models NYC and they signed me, five years ago without being in NYC. Red Models got me into some agencies around Europe like Milan, Paris and in Germany, I have been working there a few seasons but my focus was on my studies. I studied International Marketing and finished this summer 2014. Modeling was only a way to meet new and interesting people and travel but this year I am the first time in New York and starting my career as a full time model.
3. What things are you truly passionate about?
I am passionate about a lot of things but mostly I am into fast and beautiful cars, motorcycles, (dangerous) sports and Bali! Call me this typical man, loving cars and motorcycles and all the clichés that come with it but I truly love it. I am doing a lot of sports but mostly I am happy when my adrenaline level rises. I am dirt biking (mountainbike) doing muay thai, the thai boxing and I am surfing which leads me to my passion about Bali. I went to Indonesia for 6 months and I have been traveling around South East Asia about 6 weeks for my study abroad. It is such a peaceful and beautiful place, which offers so many opportunities and is simple in the same way. I love it!
4. What is the most common misconception about you?
When people meet me the first time, they think I am shy or silent. I take myself back when I meet people for the first time, which I need to be or work longer with. Reason for this is simple, I want to get to know these people, I want to know if I can trust them or not. I met many false people, which have been bad for me because I trusted blindly. The people I like will see the difference when I open myself towards them. =)
5. What is your heritage/ethnic background?
I live in Germany but my parents are originally from Poland. They migrated to Germany one year before I was born but I still have family in Poland. I love this because I was raised bilingual, raised in two cultures and my mindset isn’t as narrow as some others people mindset. I think this made me open minded towards new things and cultures. 6.
6. If not New York City, where else would you love to live?
Bali! Definitely! But I want to travel the world! I am going to Hong Kong for three months next year, I want to visit Cape Town, Florida, California and there is so much more I want to do. I want to take my best friend, which is a great photographer, pack our backpacks, getting some cameras and filming stuff and go on motorcycles or a Land Rover Defender through one or more countries and live in tents and stuff like this. I am missing doing road trips like this.
7. Is modeling mostly work or mostly fun for you?
It is a mix out of both. Sometimes it is hard work, sometimes it is fun and mostly it is both! But I think modeling is a good opportunity to travel, meet new people and see the world. I am still young and I want to see the world. I did my bachelor degree in international marketing, worked as an intern for Telekom in the communication marketing (T-Mobile) and for Porsche (yes the sports car manufacturer) in the after sales marketing at their headquarter in Stuttgart, Germany. I could imagine to work for Porsche again. It is such an amazing company with great people doing great work! Thus modeling is not the only option I have to earn money.
8. Who are some of your favorite music artists?
I love listening to music, I do it nearly all the time during the day and my favorite artists are changing with my mood and the music I want to listen to. I truly love Mando Diao, Freundeskreis, Max Herre, Bonobo and Flume currently.
9. Do you go to clubs, and are you a good dancer?
I go to clubs and bars as well. And I don’t know if I am a good dancer but I love to dance. I can´t stand people, who sit at tables or stand at the bar during a party. I need to move and feel the music!
10. Do you spend more time with friends or with family?
I am spending more time with my friends but I try to see my family whenever the opportunity arises.
11. Along with modelling, would you consider a career in acting?
I didn’t do that much in acting. Just for two university projects and it was fun. I guess acting is really hard work and yes, I would love to try it.
12. What is both your favorite and least favorite thing about modeling?
I like to travel the world and meeting new and interesting people but at the same time, I hate those 16- or 17-year-old model kids who think they are the greatest and most famous people on earth because they did a job for somebody important. They behave like the greatest assholes and at the same time they don’t know how to use the washing machine or cook a sausage in a pan! Stupid! In general there are a lot of fake and unfriendly people but I have met a lot of lifetime-friends! I think this happens everywhere, not only in modeling.
13. As a model, is dating difficult? And if yes or no, tell us why!
I don’t think it is a thing about being a model or not. Dating is always kind of difficult and easy at the same time. The hardest thing is to make the first step, go and talk to that girl! Just say hi and the conversation starts. If she says no, at least you tried! If people like each other dating is not that difficult anymore. Having a girlfriend is something else! In my case, if you travel a lot for longer times, it is hard to have a solid binding.
14. What physical feature do people admire most about you?
I am not really sure. I do workout a lot and people who are joining my gym sessions get exhausted and start hating me for the moment because I am a kick ass trainer! But afterwards they feel good!
15. What is your favorite food?
Good tasting one! Haha I love to eat!
16. What is your favorite quote or or famous last words?
You never try – You never know! This quote comes from a little boy which name is Wayan. We have been on a road trip to the most secret beaches and waves on Lombok, a small island next to Bali in Indonesia and we stopped at a small local street food market to catch something to eat. This small boy, maybe 9 years old came to us and asked in broken English if he can try to ride a longboard (the skateboard one, not for surfing). We told him that he is too young and he is going to hurt himself. That was the point where he said these words and we have been surprised! We gave him this board and he rocked it! Never judge somebody by age or appearance.
17. What are 3 things we don’t know about you?
There is a lot people don’t know about me! Just try to meet me, follow me on instagram (@TonyBCK) and be a part of my life!
